Born and raised in Newport News VA, I was raised playing on the grounds at Fort Monroe, NASA Air and Space Museum, The Jet Park on Mercury Boulevard, and all the museums in the area. At the age of 12 we moved to rural WV, where the only board games were chess, checkers, and monopoly. At the age of 19 I meet my friend Kai, who gives me a short intro to wargaming, but moves away, and gets married, and so do I.
Kai and I rekindle our freindship 20 years later, and he introduces me to wargaming. I say "Thats sort of geeky", but I try it, and Im hooked.
Now I spend many hours trying to learn as many games as I can, sometimes even painting my little memoir guys, or trying to design some fun variation of a game to see if I can do it.Its amazing after all these years of not quit knowing what to do I find War gaming.
Your favorite game(s):
Memoir 44, Manouevre, Tide of Iron, Battle Cry, Command and Colours ancients, carcassone, Ticket to Ride, Duel in the Dark, Panzer Grenadier, We the people, Wings of War (All decks and the minis), Battleline, battle for hill 218
What game(s) are you currently playing (solitaire, FTF, PBEM, etc.) or wish to play next?
Blue Max and Memoir 44 overlord
What game(s) have you played recently?
Memoir 44, Manouevre, Tide of Iron, Battle Cry, Command and Colours ancients, Battleline
In general, how much time do you spend gaming?
4 hours a week playing, 15 hours reading rules!
How big is your game collection?
25 games
Your local game club(s) and/or where you reside (let's network!)
Personal Interests (favorite activities, movies, shows, books, music, etc.)
Music, Drum and Bugle Corps, Boy Scout Leader, computer repair
Movies: Stripes, Saving Private Ryan, When Harry Met Sally, The Blues Brothers, Animal House, the Wedding Crashers
Hammer of Scots was great. It was my first time playing a block war. I really want to try this out again. 12 hours a week of gaming is probably a little aggressive. I play Wed nights 8-midnight and than on the weekend I play about 4 hours so 8 hours plus a little online, reading rules, playing stuff with the kids.
No I haven't found an opponent yet...I've logged onto VASSAL a couple of times but there's not been anyone in the Memoir section...
I'll try to log on this evening (Tues., 4-21), but it may be later in the evening...
Thanks, I'm looking forward to a match, and learning from you....
Thanks,
James B
Charles,
I just saw your post over in the South Carolina Wargamers group here on the the Social. Many gamers in SC are in the Charleston Area. There a few in the Columbia area as well and there is supposed to be a group in the Greenville Area.
I belong to the Charleston Area Wargame Society (CAWS). If you are ever in the Charleston area or are interested in keep tabs on what we are up to, I invite you to visit our Yahoo! Group at http://tinyurl.com/2tcadr We electronically publish a monthly newsletter as well.
Not this Friday, as the wife and I have to pick up grandchildren from daycare at 5PM and hang with them until 8PM. That little chore is variable once weekly.
I am not an artist but the sketches are good. They look like wood cuts or acid etchings and then printed. I will show them to my brother, a graphic artist. He should find them interesting. Check out his Civil War sketches are my page. Enjoyed the ph…
Finished Robert Clary's book on the Mexican War and have just started Noah Trudeau's classic, "Gettysburg: A Tale of Courage". Also am reading Kati Marton's earlier work on Raoul Wallenberg, "Wallenberg". Her latest tome, "Enemy of the People" is su…
Well then I shall continue to "ping" away. The use of multi-decks (Operational, Limited War and Total war) should provide some interesting variations with the historical record.
Thanks for this Jim. One can only hope she will be charged with child abuse but in this topsy-turvy, "feel good" world this woman will be excused for her poor taste in clothing selection. And to imagine this is the best way she could put her sewing…
Hang in their Robert. These card-driven games are fun. The mechanisms for movement and battle are fairly easy. Like you stated, and to paraphrase Shakespeare, "the strategy is the thing". Only play of the games can comfort one that their approach is…
A number of years ago I played around with a political/conflict game concept that explored the decade prior to the beginning of the American Civil War. My early draft was titled "Bitter Harvest - 1854" and did not incorporate strategy cards, which m…
I'm plugging away at the rules (Pursuit of Glory); getting a feel for the various phases of a turn, action rounds and the reliance (which I like) to using strategy as the prime mover of events. I appreciate GMT's publication of their rules. If this…
